Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel star in an upcoming comedy ‘Sex Tape’ (showing in cinemas on the 25th of July), which combines iPads, iCloud and sex to mock a real-world issue about cloud services. It is very true that most people have little grasp of how iCloud operates, what data is available where and who can see it.
In a particularly hilarious moment in the trailer, Segel’s character screams ‘nobody understands the cloud’ as they realise what has happened.
“It went up, it went up to the cloud”
“You can’t get it down from the cloud?”
“Nobody understands the cloud, it’s a ****ing mystery.”
The film takes this to the unrealistic extreme of suggesting that iCloud automatically shares a passionate video of the couple amongst their friends and family. The plot here is that Diaz and Segel’s characters give the iPads away as gifts, implying that they all sync to the same account. This is obviously an extremely unlikely scenario, but with all films, you have to give some dramatic leeway here (including the iPad UI that looks suspiciously like a Mac dialog).
However, at least from the trailer it seems to pull off the combination of iCloud and sex quite well — it is genuinely funny. Sex Tape is due in cinemas on the 25th of July. Hopefully, the whole film is as entertaining as the trailer suggests.
